It wasn’t until they’d made it back to his hotel that he realized she was Draconian. In the holographic glare of the nightclub, Thrush could only make out that she was lovely, her face narrow like a sleek ship, her nose a straight elegant line from her brows to her amused lips. She smelled like a sip of wine, dark and sweet and dizzying. When she’d leaned close to make herself heard over the music, her breath on his ear had been an erotic experience. She’d told him that her name was Sapphire, and that she wanted to take his clothes off and spend the night making him beg for her.

With all of that, who cared where in the galaxy she’d come from?

But now that they were past the front door of his hotel room, tangled in each other’s arms, kissing, nibbling, he could see her scales. They dusted her temples, subtle, red-orange and fine as freckles, somewhat concealed by her long ruby hair. Her low-cut golden camisole top, held up with the slimmest straps, gave an excellent view of the scales that streaked down her throat and chest, disappearing into her cleavage.

No one but the Draconians knew just how far they’d altered their own humanity. They called themselves “dragons,” but it was less a statement of biology and more a statement of identity: we have riches beyond counting, secrets beyond your comprehension, power you cannot challenge, and wrath you should never provoke.
